Walgreens Increases Its 'Me to We' Efforts

By Tim Binder - 08/03/2018

Walgreens this year expanded its back-to-school program in partnership with Me to We, introducing a collection of school-related merchandise that when purchased triggers unspecified "impact" that helps fund a child's education in a developing community.

Me to We products come with a "Track Your Impact" code that can be entered on a dedicated walgreens.com microsite to unveil how the purchase of that item makes a difference.

Me to We, which donates half of its profits to the We Charity, is closely aligned with but a separate entity from the Toronto-based nonprofit. Both metowe.com and trackyourimpact.com are operated by the We Charity and are accessible from its primary website, we.org.

"At Walgreens, we believe our business should be a catalyst for change to help improve the lives of people around the world," Joe Hartsig, Walgreens chief merchandising officer, said in a media release. "Our new Me to We line of school supplies makes it easy for our customers to find exclusive products they need, while also helping to provide education to communities in need."

Walgreens introduced the 2018 effort with a feature in its July coupon book and dedicated endcaps stocking the Me to We merchandise, both leveraging an "Every One Counts" theme, as well as with a July 29 circular feature.

Furthering the cause, Walgreens on July 29 launched a brand program benefiting Me to We. Together with participating manufacturers, Walgreens will make an unspecified donation to Me to We.

The retailer is calling out "Proud Supporters" of the program on the microsite as well as with a feature inside its August coupon book, which hit stores July 29. The publication also calls out the effort on its cover.

Among the supporters is Hershey Co.'s namesake brand, which secured an upfront endcap in stores with signage dedicated to the program.

Some stores also feature a separate dedicated endcap stocking items from Walgreens' Nice! private label. Accompanying signage indicates UPCs from the products can also be entered on the microsite to see their impact.

Supporting activity includes Walgreens sponsoring We Schools for the fourth year through the development of its "We Give Health" lesson plan. We Schools are a free, yearlong service-learning program that provides educators and students with curriculum and educational resources, according to the release.

Additionally, Walgreens is sponsoring the "We Day Special," which airs on ABC-TV on Aug. 17.

Walgreens and Me to We first encouraged shoppers to "Track Your Impact" during the 2017 back-to-school season.
