BJ's Promotes New CEO

BJ's Wholesale Club recently named Christopher Baldwin president and chief executive officer, only months after recruiting him from Hess Retail Corp.Effective Feb. 1, 2016, Baldwin will be responsible for the ongoing operations of the warehouse club. He succeeds Laura Sen, who will assume the role of non-executive chairman.“In a very short period [Baldwin] has demonstrated the necessary vision and leadership to take BJ's to the next level,” said Sen in a media release. “Together we have laid out a strategy for the company that will serve us for many years to come, and I believe now is the right time for [Baldwin] to assume his place as leader of BJ’s.” Baldwin joined BJ's in September as president and chief operating officer. Before joining the warehouse club, he served as chief executive officer for Hess Corp.'s retail operations, which were acquired by convenience store chain Speedway in 2014. He also previously served in executive roles at Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods Group (now Kraft Heinz Co.) and The Hershey Co."I am humbled and excited by this opportunity to lead BJ's," said Baldwin in the media release. "This is both a challenging time for retail and one full of opportunity. Our guide over the next several years will be a vision that is steadfastly focused on offering a distinctive shopping experience and deep value proposition to BJ's millions of loyal members. With the support of BJ's team members, I look forward to leading our company to even higher levels of achievement.”Baldwin will report directly to the company’s board of directors, which he and Sen will remain a part of. A BJ's spokesperson told the Institute that the company is not seeking a replacement coo.
