Walmart Offers Handy Services

By Patrycja Malinowska - 04/12/2018

Walmart is expanding its partnership with home-services mobile application Handy to offer its customers professional furniture assembly and TV installation.

Following a trial in Atlanta, the retailer is introducing the program to more than 2,000 locations this month. In participating stores, shoppers can purchase the services at checkout and schedule appointments between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. The services also are available nationwide on walmart.com, where depicted prices range from $50 to $185 for labor ranging from bike assembly to window air conditioner installation to shed assembly.

A partnership with Walmart represents the first time Handy gets a footprint in a physical store, according to National Public Radio. The company already has a partnership with Wayfair, the online furniture and home goods retailer. Handy's wider offerings also include services such as cleaning and plumbing.

For Walmart, the move helps the retailer differentiate itself as it increasingly competes in areas beyond product and price. Rival Amazon offers more than 1,200 services ranging from cleaning to plumbing from providers across 60 professions via Amazon Home Services, while consumer electronics retailer Best Buy has made connected home services a cornerstone of its growth strategy.

“At Walmart, we are tirelessly searching for new and creative ways to improve the everyday lives of our customers by providing great experiences that extend from our stores into their homes,” said Daniel Eckert, senior vice president of Walmart services and digital acceleration at Walmart U.S., in a media release. “Our program with Handy enables us to eliminate the friction of installation and assembly, and offer customers a convenient, delightful experience from start to finish. We know Handy’s services are going to be a big help to our busy customers.”

In a related move, Walmart also is expanding its partnership with CarSaver from 14 pilot stores to 250 locations. The program will also roll out nationally on walmart.com, letting buyers select their desired new or used vehicle and apply for financing and insurance, then linking them to a local dealership to complete the transaction.
