Walgreens Expands on Its Optical Idea
Walgreens recently opened a Walgreens Optical clinic at its #4067 store in Buffalo Grove, IL. It's the drugstore chain's fifth location in the Chicago market to open an Optical clinic, according to a Walgreens spokesperson, with four more clinics set to open in March.
Walgreens Optical, staffed by independent licensed optometrists who are neither employees nor agents of Walgreens, offer "complete eye care services, including comprehensive eye exams."
The Buffalo Grove clinic is located in the back of the store next to the pharmacy and healthcare clinic run by Advocate. On-site promotion includes an A-board and window poster at the store entrance, wall signage outside the clinic, and pamphlets available at checkout.
Walgreens sent a Feb. 26 email blast promoting the latest opening. Links in the email take users to a third-party site (walgreensoptical.com) operated by OMS LLC, Chicago.
The email offered special pricing on glasses and dangled 5,000 Balance Rewards points with purchase of a pair.
The first Walgreens Optical location opened in December 2016, at the Wrigley Building in Chicago, according to a Chicago Tribune report. The article reported that the vision services were a "logical extension" of Walgreens' health care and beauty offerings.
"At present, the Chicago regional market is the only place where vision care is being piloted," a Walgreens spokesperson told the Institute. "We expect to open a small number of additional locations in the weeks ahead but these will still be on a small pilot scale."
