Square Roots QR Codes

By Dan Ochwat - 02/25/2019

Square Roots, an urban farming company in Brooklyn, New York, is taking packaging of its produce (basil, sage, chives, mint, lettuce) and placing QR codes on it so consumers can scan to learn where it came from, how it was grown, and by whom. The transparency play hopes to appeal especially to consumers buying romaine lettuce, in light of the recent E. coli outbreak and recall. If not by scanning a QR code with a mobile phone camera, consumers can type in the lot number (an eight-digit code on the back of packages).
