BJ's E-Commerce Evolution

May 2017: The retailer taps Rafeh Masood to lead omnichannel and e-commerce initiatives focused on driving sales and enhancing convenience.
August 2017: BJ’s promises redesigned mobile and
desktop websites that make it easier for members to browse and purchase items online.
September 2017: The retailer goes live with two distinct e-commerce websites for its main private labels, Wellsley Farms and Berkley Jensen.
October 2017: The new BJ’s Wholesale mobile application launches.

BJ’s Wholesale Club recently released a revamped mobile application, the latest in a series of omnichannel updates from the warehouse chain as it races to expand its digital presence.

The new app, available for iOS and Android devices, allows users to more easily browse and purchase select products online.

The most notable feature, however, is the Add-to-Card coupon gallery available within the app as well as at coupons.bjs.com. It lets members select and load coupons directly to their membership cards to have them automatically applied at checkout. The gallery integrates both manufacturer coupons and offers from the retailer’s Little Book of Big Savings.

A home page carousel ad on the retailer's desktop and mobile websites tout the new functionality.

"The new BJ's mobile app and Add-to-Card coupons give members access to BJ's unbeatable value and assortment anytime, anywhere," said Rafeh Masood, senior vice president and chief digital officer.

Other functionalities in the app allow users to:

  • view year-to-date savings and rewards,
  • locate the nearest club and BJ’s Gas station, and
  • view current gas prices.

From Oct. 30 to Nov. 30, the retailer is dangling five cents off per gallon to club members who use the app to locate and select their nearest BJ’s Gas. An ad on the mobile app’s home tab plugs the promotion.

The retailer has been teasing an updated mobile app for a few months, during which time it has delivered enhancements to several other digital offerings at an impressive pace. (See timeline at right.)
